Built by parishioners, the church opened its doors in 1826. Threatened with demolition, it was saved in 1980 by a group of parishioners concerned with protecting the region’s Acadian religious and cultural heritage. It was then revived and given a new vocation: to become a community-focused Acadian place of memory by hosting artistic and cultural activities. Designated a provincial historic site, it is now a museum, art gallery and performance hall.
Over the years, the museum-church has become an important cultural center in southeastern New Brunswick. It is managed by a volunteer conservation committee and is located at 1350, Route 133, Grand-Barachois.
In 2026, the Barachois Historical Church will celebrate its 200th anniversary.
